jenary merced of Springfield inducted into AIC honor society

2014 May 23

jenary merced of Springfield was recently inducted into the Omicron Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society during a ceremony in the West Wing of the Karen Sprague Cultural Arts Center.

The Honor Society celebrates the scholarship and leadership of adult students in higher education. The chapter was established at AIC in 1961. Inductees must be matriculated in a bachelor's degree program, achieve a minimum of 24 graded semester hours at AIC, and maintain a 3.20 GPA or greater.

Pamela Robinson, associate dean for Adult and Continuing Education, said Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society that recognizes the special achievement of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. "We recognize the tremendous effort that it takes adult students to achieve eligibility for a national honor society. In addition to the everyday issues of balancing work and family, many have overcome significant personal challenges to be here. Tonight we have the opportunity to celebrate such students, and I'm very proud of all of them," Robinson said.

Richard Holzman, Ed.D., dean for quality assurance and faculty engagement, was the guest speaker. He told the group, "It is truly a rite of passage when you are recognized for the work that you have done. I encourage you to frame that certificate and hang it on the wall, and make sure you not only look at, it but your families look at, as well, because that creates the pathway for continued movement in the direction of personal, professional and career success."
